Cupless races don’t provide disposable cups at hydration stations. Instead, participants bring their own reusable bottle or collapsible cup to refill at water stations. This reduces waste and keeps the course clean. We provide fast-fill hydration setups, and volunteers will help you stay fueled and hydrated every step of the way.
What is a Cupless Race?
A cupless race eliminates the use of disposable paper or plastic cups at aid stations during the event. Instead of handing out cups of water or sports drink, race organizers provide refill stations where runners, walkers, or triathletes can fill their own bottles, flasks, or collapsible cups (we’ll provide these for all our 2026 events).
These races aren’t just about reducing trash, they represent a growing trend in the endurance industry toward more sustainable, participant-responsible events. The shift is especially visible at trail races and triathlons, but it’s gaining popularity across all formats, including youth and road events.
At Negative Split Productions, going cupless is part of a broader effort to host cleaner, greener events that respect the venues and communities we race in.
Why we are going cupless?
We didn’t make this decision lightly. Here’s why it’s important and how it benefits everyone.
🌎 Sustainability Matters
An average race with 1,000 participants can generate 4,000-5,000 discarded cups, most of which end up in landfills. By eliminating disposable cups, we drastically reduce single-use waste and our event’s carbon footprint.
🧼 Cleaner Course, Safer Roads
Cupless races stay cleaner. No more soggy cups littering aid stations or clogging storm drains. It also reduces slipping hazards, especially on hot days when spilled liquids can become slick spots on pavement or trails.
👟 Faster and Smoother Operations
For volunteers, cupless events mean fewer items to prep, hand out, and clean up. For participants, it means smoother aid stations with less clutter and confusion.
💡 A Culture Shift
Going cupless puts more ownership in the hands of participants, which we see as a positive. It aligns with the endurance mindset of being prepared, self-sufficient, and committed to the environment we race. Going cupless is a key feature of our Athlete First Initiative.
How will hydration work at a cupless event?
We’ve designed our hydration strategy to keep you moving and hydrated without missing a step.
🛠 Refill Station Setup
Every aid station will be equipped with refill stations containing water . Our trained volunteers will manage the flow and keep spouts and containers clean and ready.
🤝 Volunteer Support
Our aid station teams are ready to assist. Volunteers can help refill your bottle, point you to the right nozzle, or offer quick support if you need to clean or rinse your gear.
⏱ Strategic Placement
Refill stations are positioned at regular intervals, typically every 1 to 1.5 miles, depending on the event and conditions. You’ll have multiple chances to refuel without running dry.
What should participant bring?

Does this impact performance?
In short, only positively.
Many runners find they prefer carrying their own hydration because it gives them control over when and how much they drink. It can also reduce bottlenecks at aid stations and improve overall pacing.
For first-timers, it may take a little adjustment. But with the right setup, cupless hydration becomes second nature.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
