I am proud to announce our partnership with Trees not Tees for the 2021 Typhoon Texas Kids Triathlon. As the first US-based event to partner with Trees not Tees, participants will have the option of opting out of receiving an event shirt and will instead have a tree planted on their behalf. After the event, the information will be sent to the team at Trees not Tee and they will begin getting to work planting the trees for the participants that selected the option. Once planted, participants will receive a photo of their sapling along with the GPS coordinates of the tree.
Each year race participants from all over the country receive millions of race shirts that end up being worn once then siting a drawer or eventually end up in the trash. By offering the option for participants to plant a tree instead, we hope to create a more climate positive impact with our event.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LOCAL YOUTH TRIATHLON WORKING TO BECOME CLIMATE POSITIVE
Katy, Texas, June 10, 2021 — On Saturday, September 18th and Sunday, September 19th Negative Split Productions will produce the 6th annual Typhoon Texas Kids Triathlon, the world’s largest kids triathlon, at Typhoon Texas Waterpark.
Over 1,500 kids ages 6 to 17 years old are expected to compete in the 2-day event where they will swim, bike, and run their way around Katy Mills and Typhoon Texas Waterpark. The awards ceremony will take place immediately following the event in the wave pool and families will be able to enjoy a day at the waterpark once the event has concluded.
Each year, athletes all over the country receive millions of race t-shirts that many end up being worn once then sitting in a drawer or in the trash. To offer an alternative solution Negative Split Productions is teaming up with UK-based Trees not Tees to offer participants another option. Instead of selecting an event t-shirt, participants can opt to have a tree planted on their behalf. After the event, participants who selected the option to have a tree planted will receive a photo and GPS coordinates of their tree’s location.
“Since our first year in 2016, I have been looking for creative and innovative ways we can provide a positive environmental impact at our event,” said Tony Sapp, founder and Race Director of the Typhoon Texas Kids Triathlon. He continued, “Through our partnership with Trees Not Tee, I’m hoping we will have over 500 trees planted from the 2021 Typhoon Texas Kids Triathlon with more participants opting to plant a tree each year”
“At Trees not Tees we’re thrilled to be partnering with Tony and the team at Typhoon Texas Kids Triathlon as our first race partner in the US, “said Chris Zair, Director at Trees not Tees. “It’s great to see the team looking at sustainable race options rather than returning to the way things were pre-pandemic, and hope other races will follow suit. Excitingly, at Trees not Tees we will be launching our first reforestation project in the US in 2022, beginning next year our partner events will see their trees planted much closer to home!”
